LED Lighting Upgrade for Office Building
1The Challenge
This Exeter office building had outdated fluorescent tube lighting throughout, resulting in high energy bills and poor light quality. The client wanted to modernise the lighting while minimising disruption to their staff.
2Our Solution
We replaced 48 fluorescent fittings with energy-efficient LED panels over a single weekend to avoid disruption. We also installed PIR sensors in meeting rooms and toilets for automatic switching, and dimmable drivers in the main office areas for adjustable lighting levels.
3Results Delivered
- 48 LED panels installed (4000K daylight)
- 65% reduction in lighting energy consumption
- PIR sensors in 8 rooms for auto-switching
- Dimmable lighting in open plan areas
- Emergency lighting upgraded to LED
"The difference in light quality is remarkable – much better for screen work. Energy savings have been significant too. Great job completed over the weekend with zero disruption."
On-Site Observations
What we found during the job:
- Several fluorescent fittings had failed ballasts causing flickering - common in offices over 10 years old
- Existing emergency lighting was battery-backed fluorescent with several failed units
- Ceiling tiles had yellowed around some fittings from heat over the years
Electrician's Note:
"Weekend work means no disruption but requires precise planning. We pre-wired all panels on Friday evening so Saturday was purely fit and test."
— Shaye Grant, Lead Electrician
Professional Insight:
4000K is the sweet spot for office lighting - 5000K is too clinical and 3000K too warm for computer work. Staff feedback confirmed this.
