Why Extension Leads Can Be Dangerous

Extension leads are designed for temporary use, not as permanent solutions. When you rely on them long-term, you're introducing fire and shock risks that proper socket installations eliminate.

The London Fire Brigade reports that overloaded sockets and extension leads are one of the most common causes of electrical fires in homes. The good news? Adding more sockets is straightforward and affordable.

Common Extension Lead Dangers

Daisy-chaining extension leads

Plugging extension leads into each other multiplies the risk of overheating and fire.

Solution: Use a single extension with enough sockets, or add permanent sockets.

Overloading extension leads

Extension leads have lower ratings than wall sockets - typically 13A or less.

Solution: Check the rating and never exceed it. High-power appliances need wall sockets.

Coiled cable reels

A coiled cable carrying current generates heat that can't dissipate, leading to fire risk.

Solution: Always fully unwind cable reels before use, even for low-power devices.

Damaged or frayed cables

Exposed wires can cause electric shock or short circuits.

Solution: Replace any damaged extension lead immediately.

Running cables under carpets

Hidden cables can overheat and wear without being noticed.

Solution: Use surface-mounted trunking or add wall sockets where needed.

Outdoor use of indoor leads

Indoor extension leads aren't weatherproof and can be dangerous when wet.

Solution: Use IP-rated outdoor extension leads or install outdoor sockets.
