Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a qualified electrician for bathroom electrics?
Yes. All electrical work in bathrooms is notifiable under Part P Building Regulations due to the increased risk of electric shock from water. Work must be carried out by a registered electrician who can self-certify, or you must notify Building Control and have the work inspected.
What IP rating do bathroom lights need?
It depends on the zone. Zone 1 (above bath/shower) requires IPX4 minimum. Zone 2 (within 0.6m of Zone 1) also requires IPX4. We only install correctly rated fittings in each zone to ensure safety and compliance.
Can I install a normal socket in my bathroom?
Only shaver sockets (with isolating transformers) are permitted in UK bathrooms. Standard 13A sockets are not allowed due to shock risk. The only exception is sockets in very large bathrooms, positioned at least 3m from any bath or shower.
How long does electric shower installation take?
A new electric shower installation typically takes 4-6 hours. This includes running a new dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, installing the shower unit, and fitting an isolator switch. Replacement of an existing shower is quicker at 2-3 hours.
Do I need an extractor fan in my bathroom?
Building Regulations require mechanical ventilation in bathrooms without opening windows. Even with a window, an extractor fan significantly reduces condensation and mould risk. Fans with humidity sensors are most effective as they activate automatically.
