Why Dimmer Switches Cause Problems
The switch to LED lighting has left many homes with dimmer switches that no longer work properly. Flickering, buzzing, limited range, and lights that won't fully dim are all common issues when old dimmers meet new technology.
The good news is that most dimmer problems have simple solutions - usually replacing the dimmer switch with one designed for LED bulbs.
Common Dimmer Problems & Solutions
LED lights flickering on dimmer
Cause: Incompatible dimmer switch - standard dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs don't work well with LEDs.
Solution: Replace with an LED-compatible (trailing edge) dimmer switch designed for your bulb wattage.
Lights don't dim smoothly
Cause: Wrong dimmer type or bulb/dimmer mismatch. Some LED bulbs have limited dimming range.
Solution: Check bulb dimming range (some only dim to 20%). Upgrade to a quality LED dimmer.
Buzzing or humming noise
Cause: Dimmer switch struggling with load, or vibration in the bulb's internal components.
Solution: Try different bulbs first. If persists, upgrade to a quiet-technology LED dimmer.
Lights won't turn completely off
Cause: Dimmer minimum load too high for LED bulbs, or incompatible dimmer technology.
Solution: Install a dimmer with adjustable minimum setting, or add a bypass module.
Dimmer switch hot to touch
Cause: Overloaded dimmer - too many bulbs on one switch, or dimmer rating exceeded.
Solution: Check dimmer wattage rating against total bulb load. Replace with higher-rated dimmer if needed.
Choosing the Right LED Dimmer
Check the dimmer type
Look for "trailing edge", "LED compatible", or "universal" dimmers
Match the wattage
Total bulb wattage must be within dimmer's min/max range - LED dimmers often have 10W minimum
Consider quality brands
Varilight, BG Nexus, and Lutron offer reliable LED dimming with smooth operation
Use compatible bulbs
Stick to quality dimmable LEDs - check manufacturer compatibility lists

Frequently Asked Questions
Why don't my LED bulbs work with my existing dimmer?
Most older dimmer switches use 'leading edge' technology designed for incandescent and halogen bulbs, which worked by cutting the power at the start of each AC cycle. LED bulbs need 'trailing edge' dimmers that cut power at the end of the cycle. Using the wrong type causes flickering, buzzing, or limited dimming range.
Do I need a special dimmer switch for LED lights?
Yes - for best results, use a dimmer specifically designed for LED bulbs. Look for 'LED compatible', 'trailing edge', or 'universal' dimmers. Check that the dimmer's minimum and maximum wattage ratings match your bulb setup. Quality LED dimmers from brands like Varilight, BG, and Lutron give the smoothest performance.
Can any LED bulb be dimmed?
No - only LED bulbs marked as 'dimmable' can be used with dimmer switches. Using a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer can cause damage to the bulb and unpredictable behaviour. Even dimmable LEDs have varying dimming ranges - some only dim to 20-30% of full brightness.
Should I replace my dimmer or my bulbs?
Usually the dimmer. LED technology has changed significantly, but many homes still have older dimmers. A new LED-compatible dimmer typically costs £20-50 and solves most problems. It's also worth trying different LED bulb brands, as compatibility varies - Philips, Osram, and Crompton generally work well with quality dimmers.
