When Flickering Lights Are a Warning Sign

Occasional flickering is usually harmless, but persistent or widespread flickering can indicate serious electrical problems that need immediate attention.

Causes of Flickering Lights

1. Loose or Failing Light Bulbs

The simplest cause. Before assuming the worst:

  • Check bulb is tight in socket
  • Try a new bulb - old bulbs flicker before failing
  • LED compatibility - Check bulb works with fitting

Signs It's Just the Bulb:

  • Only one light affected
  • Flickering stops with new bulb
  • No other electrical issues

2. Faulty Light Switches

Worn switches can cause intermittent connections:

  • Flickering when switch moved slightly
  • Switch feels loose or stiff
  • Buzzing sound from switch
  • Warm switch when lights are on

Solution: Replace the switch (£30-60 installed)

3. Loose Wiring Connections

More serious than bulb issues:

  • Junction box connections loosen over time
  • Backstab connections (push-fit) can fail
  • Age and vibration loosen terminals

Warning Signs:

  • Multiple lights on same circuit affected
  • Gets worse over time
  • Flickering changes with house movement

This needs professional attention - loose connections cause fires.

4. Circuit Overloading

Too much load on a circuit causes voltage drop:

  • Lights dim when appliances start (washing machine, kettle)
  • Lights brighten when appliances stop
  • Worse at certain times (when cooking, doing laundry)

Solutions:

  • Spread high-power appliances across circuits
  • Consider additional circuits
  • Consumer unit upgrade may help

5. Voltage Fluctuation

Your electricity supply isn't perfectly stable:

  • Normal range: 230V ±10% (207V to 253V)
  • Brief fluctuations are normal
  • Prolonged low voltage indicates supply issues

When to Contact DNO (Distribution Network Operator):

  • Persistent low voltage
  • Multiple neighbours affected
  • Equipment running slowly or failing

6. Faulty Main Connections

The connection between supply and your installation:

  • Loose service head connection
  • Corroded meter tails
  • Faulty main switch

Signs:

  • Whole house affected
  • Gets worse over time
  • Lights flicker with no pattern

This is serious - can cause fire or electric shock.

7. LED Driver Issues

LED lights have drivers that can cause flickering:

  • Incompatible dimmer switches
  • Poor quality LED products
  • Overloaded driver in integrated fittings

Solutions:

  • Try different LED brand
  • Upgrade to LED-compatible dimmer
  • Replace failing integrated fittings

Dimmer Switch Flickering

Common with LED Bulbs

Older dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs often cause LED flickering:

Dimmer TypeLED Compatible
Trailing edgeMuch better
LED-specificBest option

Fixing Dimmer Flickering

  • Check bulb compatibility with dimmer
  • Try different LED brand - some work better
  • Upgrade to trailing edge dimmer - £30-60 installed
  • Check minimum load is met

When to Call an Electrician Immediately

Emergency Signs

Call immediately if flickering is accompanied by:

  • Burning smell anywhere in property
  • Scorch marks on sockets, switches, or consumer unit
  • Buzzing or crackling sounds
  • Hot sockets or switches
  • Sparks when switching on
  • Tripping RCD or MCB at same time

Urgent Investigation Needed

Book soon if you notice:

  • Flickering across multiple circuits
  • Getting progressively worse
  • Started after building work
  • Affecting neighbours too
  • Old wiring (pre-1970s property)

Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1: Identify the Scope

  • Single bulb? One room? Whole house?
  • Which lights are affected?
  • Are they on the same circuit?

Step 2: Check Simple Causes

  • Tighten bulbs
  • Try replacement bulbs
  • Note if dimmer-related

Step 3: Look for Patterns

  • When does it happen?
  • Which appliances are running?
  • Any triggers you can identify?

Step 4: Visual Inspection

Look but don't touch:

  • Check consumer unit for scorch marks
  • Look at socket/switch faceplates
  • Note any burning smell

Step 5: Document for Electrician

If calling for help, note:

  • When it started
  • Which lights/circuits
  • Any patterns observed
  • Recent work or changes

Frequently Asked Questions

Is flickering lights dangerous?

It can be. Occasional single-bulb flickering is usually fine, but widespread flickering indicates potential fire risk.

Why do my lights flicker when the heating comes on?

Your heating system may be on a heavily loaded circuit, or the motor startup causes voltage drop. Consider dedicated heating circuit.

Should I turn off the power if lights flicker?

If accompanied by burning smell, heat, or sparks - yes, immediately. For minor flickering, it's usually safe while you investigate.

My neighbour's lights flicker too - what does that mean?

Supply issue from the network. Contact your DNO (Western Power Distribution in Devon: 105).
