Why Do I Smell Burning from My Electrics?

An electrical burning smell means something is overheating right now. The most common description we hear is "burning plastic" or "hot fish" – that's PVC cable insulation breaking down under excessive heat. At 70°C the insulation starts to soften; above 100°C it actively degrades and releases toxic fumes. By the time you can smell it, temperatures at the fault point may already exceed 150°C.

The two most frequent causes we attend in Devon are loose terminal connections and overloaded cables. A loose connection creates electrical resistance at the junction point – the electricity has to force its way through a poor contact, generating intense localised heat. We've opened consumer units where the busbar has turned black and the plastic housing has started to deform. At that stage, the board needs emergency replacement before it's safe to restore power.

The other common scenario is an extension lead or adaptor being used to run high-power appliances. A standard 13A extension lead can handle about 3kW – but a fan heater (2kW) plus a tumble dryer (2.5kW) exceeds that rating, and the cable itself becomes the heating element. If you can smell burning near a multi-socket adaptor, unplug everything immediately and don't use it again.

Common Causes of Electrical Burning Smells

Overheating Wiring

Fire Risk

Damaged insulation or overloaded cables generate excessive heat, causing the plastic covering to melt and produce a burning smell.

Solution:Immediate isolation and professional inspection of affected circuits

Loose Electrical Connections

Fire Risk

Loose wire connections create resistance and arcing, generating intense heat that can melt plastics and cause fires.

Solution:Urgent tightening or replacement of connections by a qualified electrician

Overloaded Outlets or Extension Leads

Fire Risk

Plugging too many high-power devices into one socket or using cheap extension leads can cause overheating.

Solution:Load redistribution and installation of additional sockets

Faulty Consumer Unit

Fire Risk

A failing MCB, melting busbar, or corroded connections in your fuse box can generate burning smells.

Solution:Consumer unit inspection and potential emergency replacement

Damaged Appliance

Urgent

Internal faults in appliances like motors, transformers, or heating elements can cause burning smells when in use.

Solution:Appliance isolation and PAT testing

Old or Degraded Wiring

Fire Risk

Rubber-insulated wiring from the 1950s-70s degrades over time, becoming brittle and prone to overheating.

Solution:Rewiring assessment for properties with outdated installations

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I smell burning from my electrics?

A burning smell from electrics indicates overheating wiring, loose connections, or failing components. This is a serious fire risk requiring immediate attention. Turn off the power and contact an emergency electrician immediately.

What should I do if I smell electrical burning?

Turn off the power at the consumer unit immediately, do not touch damaged components, ventilate the area, and call an emergency electrician. If you see smoke or flames, evacuate and call 999.

Is a burning electrical smell an emergency?

Yes, a burning smell from your electrical system is always an emergency. Overheating wiring and electrical fires can escalate rapidly. Never ignore this warning sign – get professional help immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can smell burning from my electrics — is it dangerous?

Yes, this is an emergency. A burning smell indicates overheating connections, melting insulation, or arcing. Turn off the affected circuit at the consumer unit immediately and call an electrician.

What causes a burning smell from electrical sockets?

Common causes include loose connections, overloaded circuits, damaged cables behind the wall, or a failing socket. All require immediate professional investigation to prevent fire risk.

How much does it cost to fix a burning electrical smell?

Emergency callout is from £120 plus VAT. The repair cost depends on the cause — loose connections are quick fixes, but damaged cables or overloaded circuits may need more extensive work from £200-£800.

Should I call the fire brigade for an electrical burning smell?

If you see smoke, flames, or the smell is strong, call 999 first. For a faint smell, turn off the circuit and call an electrician urgently. Don't ignore it — electrical fires can develop rapidly.
