Wind Turbine Installation

Domestic, agricultural & commercial wind power across Devon, Cornwall & Somerset — full electrical works, G99 DNO approval and hybrid system design

Harnessing the South West's Best Natural Resource

Devon, Cornwall and Somerset are some of the windiest counties in the UK — and a properly sited turbine pays for itself faster than almost any other renewable. We provide the complete electrical side of every wind installation: foundation earthing, SWA cable runs, inverter and battery wiring, DNO G98/G99 notification, and integration with existing solar PV and battery systems. We do not supply the turbine itself but work alongside leading suppliers including Bergey, Kingspan KW3/6, Evance and FuturEnergy.

Pole-Mounted Domestic (1-6kW)

Free-standing 6-15m masts for rural homes and smallholdings. Typical install for 4-bed off-grid Dartmoor or Exmoor properties.

From £6,500 plus VAT

Building-Mounted Micro (0.5-2.5kW)

Roof or barn-eaves mounted units for low-wind sites. Best paired with solar PV and battery storage.

From £3,200 plus VAT

Agricultural / Commercial (6-50kW)

Working farms, equestrian centres and rural businesses. G99 DNO application included.

From £14,000 plus VAT

Electrical Works We Carry Out

Mast foundation electrical earthing (BS 7671 Section 542)
Underground SWA cable runs from turbine to inverter
Inverter and dump-load resistor wiring
DC and AC isolation, fuse and surge protection
Battery bank wiring (lithium LFP or lead-acid)
G98 / G99 DNO connection notification & approval
Grid-tie or off-grid switching
Generator changeover for backup
Smart monitoring & remote shutdown
Lightning protection and SPDs
Full Electrical Installation Certificate
Building control notification (Part P)

G98 & G99 DNO Approval Included

Every grid-connected wind installation legally requires notification to your Distribution Network Operator (Western Power Distribution / National Grid). We handle the entire process — technical drawings, protection settings, witness testing — and submit on your behalf. SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) registration is included with grid-tie installs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are wind turbines worth installing in Devon?

It depends entirely on your site. Coastal and high-ground locations in Devon, Cornwall, Exmoor and Dartmoor regularly see annual mean wind speeds above 6 m/s — economically viable for a domestic turbine. Inland, sheltered valley sites typically see 3-4 m/s, where solar PV will give a better return. We carry out a free desktop wind-resource assessment using NOABL/Met Office data before recommending any install.

Do I need planning permission for a wind turbine?

Almost always, yes. Pole-mounted turbines on domestic property require full planning permission. Building-mounted micro turbines fall under permitted development in some areas but NOT in National Parks, AONBs, conservation areas or on listed buildings. We'll guide you through the planning process and provide all the technical evidence (noise model, visual impact, grid connection) your local authority needs.

How much electricity will a domestic wind turbine generate?

A well-sited 5kW turbine on Exmoor or coastal Cornwall typically generates 8,000-12,000 kWh per year — equivalent to 2-3 average UK households. With the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), surplus generation earns you 5-15p/kWh exported back to the grid. Combined with solar PV, you can realistically reach 80-90% energy independence.

What's the difference between G98 and G99?

G98 covers small-scale generators up to 16A per phase (≈3.68kW single-phase) — these can be commissioned and notified to the DNO afterwards. G99 covers anything larger and requires DNO approval BEFORE installation. We handle both processes including the technical drawings, protection settings and witness testing required by Western Power Distribution.

Can a wind turbine work alongside solar panels and battery storage?

Yes, and this is the system we recommend most often. Solar PV peaks in summer days; wind peaks in winter and at night. Combining both with a 10-20kWh lithium battery gives you year-round generation and can take a typical Devon home off-grid for 10+ months a year. Modern hybrid inverters (Victron, SMA, Sunsynk) manage all three sources seamlessly.

How long do wind turbines last?

A quality domestic turbine (Bergey, Skystream, Kingspan KW3/6) has a 20-25 year design life with one bearing change typically required at year 10-12. The inverter has a 10-15 year life. We provide a full maintenance schedule and offer annual safety inspections.
