Outdoor Power Sockets — The Complete UK Guide
Everything you need to know about external power sockets, outside plug sockets and weatherproof exterior mains sockets — from a Devon-based, CHAS approved electrical contractor.
Why you need a proper outdoor socket
Running an extension lead through a window is the leading cause of garden electrical fires. A properly installed IP66 outdoor socket on its own RCBO is safer, neater and adds real value to your property.
What we install

- Pedestal / bollard sockets for the middle of a lawn or driveway
- Garage and shed sub-circuits with their own consumer unit
- Hot tub and pond pump supplies on dedicated 30mA RCBO protection

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit an outdoor power socket myself?
No. Installing an external/outdoor socket is notifiable work in England & Wales under Part P of the Building Regulations when it forms a new circuit, and any new outdoor wiring must be tested and certified by a qualified, registered electrician. We provide the certificate and notify Building Control.
What rating outdoor socket do I need?
For UK weather use a minimum IP66 rated weatherproof socket on its own RCBO (30mA). We typically fit double IP66 sockets fed in 2.5mm² SWA cable on a dedicated circuit so it never trips the rest of the house.
How much does an outside socket cost to install?
A single weatherproof outdoor socket installed from an existing nearby ring main starts at £180 plus VAT. A new dedicated SWA-fed circuit from the consumer unit is typically £280–£420 plus VAT depending on cable run.
Do outdoor sockets need RCD protection?
Yes — any socket likely to be used outdoors (including garage/shed sockets) must be protected by a 30mA RCD or RCBO. We only fit full RCBO protection so a fault outside never knocks out the rest of your home.
Can you fit an external mains socket on the back of my house?
Yes — through-the-wall IP66 sockets are one of our most common jobs across Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Exeter. Same-week appointments and tidy work guaranteed.
